Jesus
said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are
doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.” (Luke 23:34)
Thought:
Today’s verse takes us almost to the end of the walk of Jerusalem. It tells us
why Jesus was walking to Jerusalem with his disciples—that forgiveness is all
about love, compassion, sacrifice, and the future. Jesus was saying to all who
could hear that this is what happens with a God who loves, provides His mercy
to us, so that we may be forgiven. Jesus was also demonstrating his faith and
teaching how to pray.
What
is God willing to forgive? One of the thieves hanging on a cross next to Jesus
had lived a life of rebellion and crime. Then he met Jesus, the one who,
through his suffering on the cross, still demonstrated the Fathers love by
forgiving even those who caused his death. Though the one robber mocked Jesus,
the second knew that he justly deserved what was being done to him; He knew
that this man, this “King of the Jews” had done nothing wrong. Suddenly he
witnessed a compassionate love and forgiveness for those who had caused Jesus’
unimaginable suffering on that cross. It was at this moment of his belief that
Jesus was who he said he was and asked Him to “remember him when He came into
His Kingdom.” Today this man resides with Jesus in paradise! To God be the
Glory!
Jesus
was described as “having compassion” for the individuals who came into his
life, as well as the crowds. Yes, no doubt Jesus loved those who went into the
synagogue, those who prayed, those who worshipped; but Jesus also loved those
who swore all day, never went into the synagogue, those who hurt the poor, and
those who were downright evil.
Many
of our challenges today are no different than the times of Jesus and his
disciples—greed, injustice, and day to day living challenges—we face every day,
create difficult choices we must make to do the right thing. Only through God’s
love and our prayer can we make the right choices and know that when we stumble
we are forgiven because of His love, compassion, and mercy. Do you join in your
loved ones and those around you in their sufferings? Do you ask for God to
equip you to bring them comfort? If Jesus dwells within you, then compassion
for those who suffer should dwell in you also.
Prayer:
Jesus thank you for loving me, and forgiving me of all my sins. Help us to
comfort those who are suffering, and when we think of the sufferings we are
experiencing ourselves, may we be reminded of what you endured for us at
Calvary. In Your Holy Name, Amen!
